Las Vegas, NV- June 3, 2009 - Carina Technology, a Huntsville-AL-based technology company, was recognized by the Utilities Telecom Council (UTC) with the UTC EXPO 2009 Product Award for Best Smart Meter/Smart Grid Products/Services at the UTC Telecom 2009 event in Las Vegas. Carina’s Universal Metering Device (UMD™) with Energy Intelligence™ was chosen by a panel of industry experts for innovation, quality, and ability to effectively meet utility management needs. Carina’s solution was recognized as an innovative first or interim step for utilities to migrate existing systems toward Smart Grid while actively reducing operating costs and increasing energy efficiency.
Carina’s UMD™ for advanced energy data collection, management, and control along with its Energy Intelligence™ software platform is deployed by utilities across North America for bi-directional, real-time management and control of multiple utility systems. It can be fully integrated into existing systems including billing, CIS, GIS and outage management for unilateral control from a single interface. The UMD™ is designed to communicate over a variety of backhaul networks including digital cellular, ethernet, and WiFi in an effort to utilize existing open infrastructures and avoid capital cost involved in building proprietary fixed networks exclusively for metering.
“Being chosen by UTC as the best-in-class provider of Smart Grid Products and Services is an honor,” said Mike Smalley, COO and VP of Business Development for Carina. “There are many players in the smart grid space, and this award validates Carina’s view that an interoperable, open migration approach has significant advantages over the limitations of a quick fix with many basic smart meter applications. We want to provide the value and power of intelligent information to our customers and help them figure out what ‘Smart Grid’ will mean for them.”
Since launching the UMD™ earlier this year, Carina has increased its focus on facilitating open communication and data sharing between providers, consumers and communities while providing centralized solutions for a variety of energy-related functions such as demand response, prepaid electricity and in-home networking for providers as well as consumers.
