Companies here are already swapping technology to achieve sustainability and clean energy

Technology transfer is alive and well in Huntsville, as companies that made their names creating technologies for NASA and the Department of Defense are increasingly looking into developing those technologies for commercial green technologies and clean energy applications.
Carina Technology's smart metering device has already garnered national attention. Carina recently won the Utilities Telecom Council EXPO 2009 Product Award for Best Smart Meter/Smart Grid Products/Services.
"The initiative with this contract is to figure out a way to take energy off the grid," says Jay Newkirk, president and CEO of Carina. "That's equally important as building another nuclear plant to generate more energy."
With the TVA contract, Carina is tasked with taking 1,200-1,300 megawatts off the grid.
"A nuclear plant generates 1,400 megawatts," Newkirk explains. "This hot water heater device, deployed correctly in the TVA region, would be equivalent to building a $12 billion nuclear plant. That's how huge this is."
