Tennessee electric co-op chooses Carina Technology to smarten its system

Although it may be a few years before a national electric smart grid becomes a reality, the Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corp. has approached Carina Technology in Huntsville about making its system smarter now.
By placing Carina's collar-like Universal Metering Device (UMD) on the meters of non-paying customers, the electric co-op will soon be able to remotely disconnect and reconnect service. This technology will eliminate the time-consuming and costly task of sending workers into the field for disconnects, which is significant considering that the utility's 180,000 customers live in a widespread territory with challenging flat-to-hilly terrain.
"We looked at all of the options for smart meters and AMI, and we looked at where the industry is heading," says Co-op Marketing Coordinator Chuck Barber .... "With a slower economy, every utility is seeing its problems increase," Barber says.
