CarinaPoint™ EMD (Ethernet Meter Device)

CarinaPoint™ EMD is the only Internet-based information system interface device that resides in a collar base between the residential electric socket and the electric meter. This easily accessible customer interface provides the utility with a variety of applications that not only improve service but also reduce cost. In addition to traditional metering applications, our device provides reliability information including the monitoring, reporting, and storing of outages as short as 1/2 a cycle.

The CarinaPoint™ EMD is capable of providing this access over a variety of Wide Area Network (WAN) connections including Fiber-to-the-home, Ethernet, Broadband Coax, GSM/GPRS Class 12, Wi-Fi 802.11b, Broadband over Power Lines (BPL), and Frame Relay. At the home, CarinaPoint™ EMD provides the IP gateway which enables access to the electric meter and establishes the basis for a Local Area Network (LAN). This LAN is obtained through a ZigBee™ wireless network on board through which the utility can deploy a variety of applications including meter reading, remote meter disconnect and reconnect, Pre-Pay metering, Demand-Side management via thermostat control, and water heater and pool pump management.

In addition to the wireless LAN, a broadband network can be provided through a coaxial cable connection. This allows the customer to access various applications that require high bandwidth including telephone services, television services, and of course, high speed Internet.

To ensure compliance and security, the interface utilizes open standards-based architecture communication protocols including XML and HTML. Our core strength is in the necessary software interfacing that allows these various applications and products to become a total home power solution. We have developed interfaces to over 50 leading CIS, GIS, and Outage Management Systems both off-the-shelf (OTS), and mainframe-based. This means that data can be individually queried using a standard Internet browser.

Our CarinaXchange™ provides the database tools for security and encryption techniques that reduce the threat of data corruption. All data is stored in an open database format for ease of access. We provide numerous customized reporting capabilities including reliability reporting, tampered accounts, voltage anomalies, etc.
