An Overview of Carina Technology

Carina utilizes the cellular network control channels to provide reliable, cost effective two-way communications to electric distribution assets. Beyond the wireless cellular network, CTI systems transmit the data securely to the customer’s application through a secure web-based application and/or integration into third party applications. The typical data flow diagram is shown in Figure 1, and involves the elements of:

• Wireless communication network
• Cellular Tower Sites
• Cellular Switching Center(s)
• Aggregation Partner Network Switching Center
• Carina Network Operations Center
• CarinaXchange™
• Customer Application Interface Gateways

Recognizing the importance of security to distribution automation and control functions, CTI has engineered its hardware, communication systems, and software solutions to provide a high degree of system security.

As a reference for developing its security systems, CTI monitors two main security standards written specifically for the electric utility industry:

• NERC Standard 1200 for Cyber Security IEEE Standard 1402-2000;
• IEEE Guide for Electric Power Substation Physical and Electronic Security

Although the NERC Standard 1200 for Cyber Security currently applies only to the bulk power control systems, CTI believes it outlines prudent security for distribution automation systems, the typical application of CTI solutions.
